SAFETYTOUR Workshop

Modern vehicle technology & alternative drives
On 2 November 2019, the members of the St. Hubert, Kempen, Schmalbroich, Tönisberg and Unterweiden firefighting units completed advanced training in the field of technical assistance. Having last attended the basic seminar of the S-GARD safety tour in August, organised by Frank Gerhards in coordination with Tim Janßens, the Kempen fire brigade’s technical assistance training officer, the theoretical part of the course was now expanded to include modern vehicle technology and alternative drive systems. In the practical part, the stations were a road accident with a trapped person, a car on its roof and a car on its side. This time, the training was conducted by the Safetytour trainers Leo Thielen and Oliver Elsner.
A high level of participation in the follow-up seminar
The theoretical part was characterised by a high level of participation from the participants and great interest in the two topics. Following the group task, the results were presented in a very informative and technically correct manner.
Not only the participants, but also the trainers were able to expand their experience and knowledge. Valuable technical contributions often come from the participants themselves, because they work in their main profession as motor vehicle specialists, in the metalworking trades or in the emergency services, as in this case as full-time emergency paramedics and practical instructors, and can therefore contribute good and valuable technical information to the theoretical and practical lessons. The practical part was carried out not far from the fire and rescue station on the premises of the Burchert company. The company owner provides the training site and, in co-operation with ABPE, the transport of the scrap vehicles. In addition, the vehicles from the car recycling company Car are also made available to the fire brigade free of charge for training purposes.
It is easy to see from the photos below that it was an instructive day for everyone involved. With a good dose of team spirit and plenty of fun, knowledge was deepened, tasted, marvelled at and, as is usual in the Rhineland, a good laugh was had.
