Fire brigade also on duty between days and on public holidays
This selflessness doesn’t just affect the helper, but the whole family. What do your family members think about spending Christmas without their spouse or a parent? We asked various volunteer and professional firefighters about their experiences of being on call at Christmas. We received different and unexpectedly honest answers from you. We would like to share one of our interviews with you: How does it feel to be on call on Christmas Eve?
The feeling changes over the years. When you don’t have children yet, you enjoy doing it. It allows you to give your colleagues with children a nice family celebration. But admittedly, you always have a strange feeling in your chest about spending Christmas Eve without your family. As soon as you have children of your own, you naturally want a peaceful family celebration. On the other hand, it’s always a nice evening with your colleagues at the station. Everyone is in the same situation. We cook together and have a good time.
What does your family say about being ready for action on Christmas Eve?
My family understands my job and the associated services on public holidays and family celebrations. But there is still some sadness about not being able to spend Christmas together.
Are you celebrating Christmas?
Christmas Eve cannot be celebrated later. Nevertheless, we postpone some traditions to the first or second day of Christmas.
Do you celebrate Christmas at the station?
Yes, we spend the day just like at home with Christmas stories, good food and socialising.
Are operations on Christmas Eve more poignant than on "normal" days?
No. However, there is a difference to „normal“ days. People show more gratitude and appreciation to the emergency services on these days.
Appreciation and gratitude for your help should be shown throughout the year. At the end of the year, we would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU once again! THANK YOU for your commitment at all times and in all places! We hope you all have a wonderful and carefree Christmas!
