Behind the scenes: A day on set with S-GARD

Contamination prevention is currently THE fire service topic. We are also very much involved with this topic. We wanted to give you a simple recommendation for preventing the spread of contamination. But what is the best way to do this? In order to bring the topic closer to you, we sat down together internally and realised that a clear and explanatory film is the best possible way to do this.

But a film is more work than you might think. You need a location, firefighters, a presenter, a camera team and, of course, a day on which everyone has time. The participants for the day were quickly found, as was the location, as the Düren fire brigade immediately agreed. But in order to have a successful day of filming, we were still missing the most important thing, the script. Anyone who thinks that the presenter just stands in front of the camera and talks away is wrong. The script is the most time-consuming part of a film. There are several people with different opinions and different points of view involved. Are you wondering what a finished script might look like?

We’ll show you a short section from our 1st part „After the fire – scene hygiene“:

Half long shot

MARIUS stands at the vehicle, turns round and then sees the squad coming towards him „The days when soiled turnout gear was a sign of real heroes are long gone. We all know that fire smoke and its by-products are harmful to our health …“ the squad has arrived at the vehicle.
(Last movement, you can see the soiled PPE)

Once the script had been finalised and we had found a suitable date, we were able to start filming at the Düren fire station. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t play ball, but we made the best of it. Our influencer Marius took on the moderating role and two Düren firefighters were available to us as actors. Despite the wind and weather and, above all, the cold, they realised our ideas perfectly and contributed their own suggestions.

What were the biggest challenges?

The film was shot in small sequences and then edited together. So we had to make sure that the beginning of the sequence starts in the same way as the sequence before it ended. That means, for example: If a car drove through the frame and no car was seen before, we had to wait. Another example was that the actors had to take up the same position as in the final sequence so that there was a smooth transition. So you had to pay attention to a lot of things. The biggest challenge on set, however, was the cold. It only took a few moments for the entire crew to be standing behind the camera in SWISSGUARD gear. Because: Our suits also keep you wonderfully warm!

How long does it take to shoot a film? We produced a total of 7 short videos and were on set for 12 hours. In our opinion, it was absolutely worth it.
What was the most fun? Everything about the shoot was incredible fun. The planning, the variety and of course the co-operation with the very friendly men from the Düren fire brigade and our presenter Marius.

We’re already looking forward to shooting more films for you and covering important topics.
